Gagosian is set to launch two new exhibitions at its 541 West 24th Street and 980 Madison Avenue locations. The first brings back a long partnership with acclaimed British artist, Damien Hirst, while the latter focuses on the kaleidoscopic compositions of Hungarian artist, Simon Hantaï.

In the former, Gagosian revisits Hirst’s “Forgiving and Forgetting” series which recently concluded at the gallery’s Rome location back in October. Made in conjunction with Archaeology Now, the paintings and sculptures stem from a fictitious shipwreck off the coast of East Africa, where Hirst tinkers with the notion of cultural origin, and perceptions of relative status and value.

Like his contemporary in Daniel Arsham, Hirst exhibits a peculiar foresight by showcasing normal pop cultural characters, such as Mickey Mouse and Goofy, in eroded Carrara marble — as if they were to be viewed in the same treasured manner years from now like the statues of Ancient Rome.

Through collaboration with the Estate of Simon Hantaï, the Gagosian will also highlight the Hungarian artist’s “Les blancs de la couleur, la couleur du blanc” series. Hantaï was best known for a process known as “folding,” where he would crumple and knot canvas, then proceed to uniformly paint over them to create a matrix of abstract alternations between pigment and ground.

“Forgiving and Forgetting” will be on view at the 541 West 24th Street location from January 20 to February 26. While “Les blancs de la couleur, la couleur du blanc” exhibits at the 980 Madison Avenue outpost from January 27 to March 5.

Also on view, Gosha Levochkin presents “Last Element” at The Hole NYC.
