NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — In response to the deadly Bronx high-rise fire last weekend, Congressman Ritchie Torres announced on Friday plans to introduce legislation in Washington to address the underlying causes of the fire.
Following the deadly blaze, Rep. Torres formed “The Bronx Task Force on Fire Safety” which includes Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Assemblywoman Yudelka Tapia, and City Council members Oswald Feliz and Pierina Sanchez.
The first of the policies the group is bringing forth is focused on space heaters and self-closing doors which includes legislation that would mandate automatic shut off space heaters to prevent overheating as well as self-closing doors in all federal-funded housing.
Other ideas include heat sensors installed in apartments to ensure the temperatures are not too cold so residents do not have to use space heaters in the first place and re-examining compliance with New York City's recent self-closing doors mandate.
Rep. Torres said the task force will develop policies that will reflect the “lessons learned” from the horrific tragedy. He plans to introduce the legislation next week.
