When actor Adam DeVine married actress (and former co-star) Chloe Bridges last fall, he did so at the magnificent Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, exchanging vows near the rocky edge of the ocean. But if you ask him about planning a destination wedding, don’t expect tips on selecting a resort or plotting a menu across borders. Other practical matters prevail.

“If you have any relatives or people in your life that you don't want to invite—roll the dice and do a destination wedding,” he jokes (maybe). “Because if you don't like those people, they also probably wish they didn't have to go to your wedding. A destination wedding is the perfect way to just level it out and get everyone that you love and you want there. If you don't want to leave the country and go to a wedding, it's an easy out.”

With the nuptials behind him, DeVine can now be seen in the second season of The Righteous Gemstones on HBO, in which he plays the youngest son in a nutty family of televangelists. He spoke with Condé Nast Traveler about his favorite filming locations, a memorable trip with his wife, and why flights are the right place to crack open some red wine.

What it’s been like to film The Righteous Gemstones around Charleston:

I mean, cuteness overload! It has so much history, the people are so dang nice, and the food is incredible. I feel like I really have to watch myself when I'm there—especially this season, where Kelvin's whole thing is about him being in great shape and having the Gemstones God squad of muscular men that surround him. I really had to make sure I didn't eat my way through Charleston. I know in travel publications, Charleston gets a lot of love, but when I talk to people just out and about, and I [mention] Charleston, I would say 8 times out of 10, they've never been. And it is one of the cutest, most up-and-coming cities. I tell people every chance I get to go there.

How he stays in shape when traveling:

I tend to have a lot of energy, so I usually work out really, really hard and then eat like a dump truck. It’s kind of my rule. I usually will attack a hotel gym, and find out how good their gym is before even booking that hotel. Usually you can track down photos of the gym, but the nicer hotel you stay at, generally the nicer gym it has. If I'm on location shooting and I rent a house, like I do in Charleston, I travel with a Peloton bike and a set of PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells, so I have my supplies.

How he spends flight time:

When I'm flying, that's my wine time. I barely drink wine outside of flights, but when I'm on a flight, for whatever reason I feel fancy. I drink my red wine and watch my movies. If your palette is garbage, you won't mind it.

How one first-class flight changed his whole travel game:

It was season one of Modern Family and I was flown to New York to do some press. It was first class and they had that lie-down seat, and I just remember being like, “This lays down like a bed. I could live here!” It was a true game-changer. I don't really spend money on a lot of things for myself, but [flights are] one thing that I do spend on. It makes the whole experience not miserable.

The best cities he’s stopped through for comedy audiences:

It's weird, comedy just kind of takes hold in certain areas, and they have such a rabid comedy fan base. Boston, they just love their comedy there. Minneapolis is a place like that, too. Boston [has] some of the best crowds that you could play in front of, but they also will turn on you if it's not going well. So you’ve really got to bring your A-game when you go to Boston.

His best (and only) vacation ever:

I've only ever been on one vacation and that was a handful of years ago now. I was like, “You know what? I've never been on vacation!” Me and Chloe, my now-wife, went to Venice and Rome and Positano and Mykonos and Paris—just bounced all around. It was incredible, and I realized I don't need to see every church in Rome. I feel after you've seen two churches you're like, “Okay, cool.” And there's another old church, very cool. I want more to go to nice restaurants and see their nightlife and then kick it on a beach.

Why he’s struggled to take vacations in the past:

It's just how my work usually lines up—I'm gone so much. I was gone 11 months out of this past year, and this year it looks like it's stacking up the same. So when I'm gone so much for work, it's hard, when you finally get home, to justify leaving again on vacation. I've been lucky enough to shoot in pretty awesome places that a lot of people would vacation at anyways, and I just use my weekends as little vacations.

A destination he could go to a million times and never be sick of it:

New Orleans. I love it there. My wife is from there—we met there—and it's just such a special place in my heart. The music is so good, the sugary drinks give you the worst headaches, and the entire place is haunted. My perfect dream vacation!

His most recent favorite filming locations:

I just shot in Atlanta and I weirdly had an aversion to shooting there, just because I love New Orleans so much and the film industry moved out of New Orleans the last few years to Atlanta. Everything was pushed there, and when I'm a producer on a project, I try to push it to the places that I want to shoot in. So I was really fighting for New Orleans, but we ended up shooting in Atlanta and what a great city that is! They really have everything: nice people, great food, awesome restaurants, professional sports and things to do at night. Also you never know when you might run into Andre 3000. You're like, “Is that T.I.? Oh my god, this place rules."

Where he’s hoping to go on his honeymoon:

I'm going to be working for the next year, so don't really know when we're going to do this honeymoon, but we really want to go to Bora Bora and stay in one of those huts over the water. That’s always been a bucket list for Chloe and myself, just because it looks so dang beautiful, and I've always wanted to dive naked from my bed into the ocean. I have to check that off.
