7News got a recent email from retired Chief Master Sergeant Stephen Maynard who wanted us to know about his family of service.
Jonathan Elias has spoken to families that have more than one member who is or has served. After talking to Chief Maynard he found that things with his family were a whole lot different.
Maynard was one of six boys and all but one served.
One was a Marine, a couple of them were in the Air Force, and the others in the Navy including Maynard.
“I was 18 and just graduated from high school and all my brothers went in the military so I guess I just wanted to do what they did," he said.
Stephen ended up serving 27 years -- Now at 74 years old he’s looking back on his family's service and wanted me to know the extent of how many years they’ve all given.
Along with Maynard, his wife Vondella served 30 years of active duty National Guard, his niece and nephew both have served and his son and his daughter-in-law are also officers in the military.
All told, the Maynard family has given more than 150 years of service to our country.
“I’m very proud of my service and proud of my family for all they have given," he said.
The Chief says four of the six brothers are now gone, but his eyes light up when he talks about all they did and all they gave to our country.
Even after retiring Chief Maynard and his wife didn’t end their service, both taught and instructed R.O.T.C. classes at a neighboring high school.
“I let the young people know there is a lot of opportunities when you get in the Militaryall my brothers were successful in the Military and when they got out they all got good jobs," Maynard said.
