Here’s a Tesla Running Apple CarPlay with a Developer’s Workaround [VIDEO]

One of the biggest feature requests from Tesla owners is for their vehicles to support Apple Music, or even run CarPlay from the iPhone maker.

While Apple Music may be a possibility given other music services such as Tidal and Spotify are supported, CarPlay in a Tesla may be slim to none, considering the automaker favours its own user interface.

But now, one developer has created a hack to run Apple CarPlay in their Tesla. Polish developer Michał Gapiński shared his CarPlay hack, which runs in Tesla’s in-car browser. We see the CarPlay interface, Apple Maps, plus working Apple Music that even plays in the background.

Here’s a video of Gapiński’s Tesla running CarPlay in the browser, which can be controlled with the steering wheel buttons in the car. He says the next step is to improve Wi-Fi and he says the stream is “2x smoother when viewed on my laptop.”

It’s unclear if Gapinski will release the code and software he used to make this possible for others to try, but it’s definitely neat to see CarPlay running in a Tesla.

Gapinski explained to Tesla North the setup is based on a custom build of Android, running on a Raspberry Pi. The project is in its early stages and he plans on releasing it to the public “when it’s polished”.

Apple’s CarPlay feature essentially mirrors what’s on your iPhone to the car, either through a USB connection or wirelessly. The software feature is provided by Apple to automakers at no charge and most have adopted the software.
