A loaded gun has been found in a student's backpack at Treasure Coast High School.
The student was arrested after a school resource officer found him and two other students walking onto campus during a perimeter check.
Port St. Lucie police say that after stopping the students, the officer noticed they smelled of marijuana.
School administrators then performed a search of their backpacks, where they found a loaded .22 Taurus with eight bullets. The gun was reported stolen in Indian River County in October, 2020.
The student faces charges of possession of a firearm on school property, carrying a concealed firearm, and grand theft.
The sophomore in high school isn't talking to police, so we don't know why he brought the gun on campus.
Port St. Lucie Police Chief John Bolduc talked to the media Friday afternoon. CBS12 News asked him about policing post-Parkland.
“I think post-Parkland, I think there’s a heightened sense of awareness because it’s been such a media story ... we’re getting a lot of calls and if I could get one thing out to our citizens, parents, we take this very serious, the laws were changed, this is very serious," he said.
The sophomore has no criminal history or gang affiliation, Chief Bolduc said.
