Apex Legends is one of the best shooters around right now, but you can only play it on PS5 and Xbox Series X through backwards compatibility. Yes, you get faster loading times and a 1440p resolution on new-gen machines, but you’re still running the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Developer Respawn said that the next-gen patch would arrive in 2021, but it got pushed to this year. According to PlayStation patch tracker PlayStation Game Size (thanks, VGC), the update is now right around the corner.

In a Reddit AMA last year, Respawn said targeting a 120fps frame rate on PS5 and Xbox Series X would be a high priority. In a game where every second matters and graceful movement can win the day, it should make each match feel much smoother to play.

Respawn also said that there would be “more formal enhancements” with the next-gen version, so expect some kind of graphical upgrade alongside the frame rate boost.

“Oh man, I WISH I had an update to share but we can’t say anything definitive at the moment—so can’t spoil anything here,” director of communications Ryan Rigney said. “Trust us tho, it’s in the works and we’re excited about it too.”
