What is MLK Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January every year to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday, which is Jan. 15.

Who is Martin Luther King, Jr.?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights leader born on Jan. 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Ga. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, helped organize the 1963 nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama, and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

In 1964, Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches.

King was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

When is MLK Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022 will be observed on Monday, Jan. 17.

Are banks open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

No, banks are closed.

Are stock markets open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

No. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq typically follow the federal holiday schedule.

Are schools open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

No. Schools are closed on most federal holidays, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Are government offices open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

City, county, state and federal offices are closed.

Are post offices closed? Is there mail delivery?

The U.S. Post offices are closed on Monday. No residential or business deliveries except Holiday Premium/Priority Mail Express.

Regular mail delivery, collections and retail services resume Tuesday.

Are restaurants and stores open on MLK Day? Will shopping malls be on a regular hours?

Most restaurants and stores are open regular hours on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and offer special MLK Day sales. Syracuse’s Destiny USA will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Is parking free?

Parking at all downtown Syracuse meters will be free on Monday.

Will there be trash collection on Monday?

No; Syracuse city trash pickup will be one day late this week. Other municipal and private haulers may work on a different schedule. Contact your local government or private hauler for details.

Are libraries open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Onondaga County’s central library and all city branches are closed. Suburban branches may vary. You can check your branch through the central library website.

Are buses running on a regular time?
