The 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon has debuted a host of incredible creations, ranging from long-awaited hot hatches to breathtaking concept cars. Not one to be left out, Subaru and its motorsport subsidiary, Subaru Tecnica International - known more commonly as STi - pulled the covers off two electric vehicles.

The STi E-RA concept is certainly the most striking of the electric duo, the sleek specimen a concept of STi's electric race car of the same name. It is being developed under an internal project that aims to gather experience with cutting-edge technology as we approach motor racing in a carbon-neutral era. We're in no doubt the brand will be able to pull this off if its work with the rally-conquering Subaru WRX STI is any indication.

One of the main goals for the project is to record a Nurburgring lap time of 6:40 from 2023 onward. The brand is no stranger to creating durable cars with exceptional handling prowess, and the STI E-RA should be no different. Subaru says it has leveraged its know-how in "all-wheel control technology" to control the high 800 kW (1,073 horsepower) output, with newly-adopted four-motor, four-wheel torque vectoring technology.

The second electric concept revealed is an STI concept variant of the Solterra electric SUV. We first learned of Subaru's all-electric SUV last year. After a slew of teasers and a Japanese reveal, it arrived on US shores at the LA Auto Show in November. The new Solterra STI concept is replete with sportier detailing, a roof spoiler, and cherry red-painted under-spoilers underline the brand's renowned sporty nature.

The Solterra is a big deal for Subaru, being the first electric vehicle the brand will launch globally. Co-developed with Toyota, the battery-powered SUV shares a platform with Toyota's bZ4X. Dual electric motors propel the Solterra, with a combined power output of 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard and will, hopefully, provide loyal customers with the rugged, daily usability they've come to expect from the brand.

Subaru claims the Solterra can travel up to 220 miles on a single charge and while that isn't bad, it's 30 miles fewer than its Toyota twin. While Subaru hasn't made any claims of increased performance from the Solterra STI Concept, we're doubtful there are any, and this will just be a gauge of market interest for now.
