MILLINGTON, Tenn. — A Streetsboro native is serving with Beach Master Unit ONE at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in California.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Justin Waycaster joined the Navy for the opportunities serving provides.

"I joined the Navy to see the world," Waycaster said.

Today, Waycaster serves as a gunner's mate.

"I love getting to interact with other sailors, and being able to teach them about my job and firearms," he said.

According to Waycaster, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Streetsboro.

"I learned in Streetsboro to be resilient and to never give up," said Waycaster.

Beach Master Unit ONE teams embark on amphibious ships and deploy as part of an Expeditionary Strike Group. When not deployed, Beachmasters participate in exercises and provide support services at Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado, and throughout Southern California.

According to Navy officials, the mission of Beach Master Unit ONE is to support the landing movement over the beaches of troops, equipment and supplies. Additionally, the Beachmasters control all craft and amphibious vehicles in the vicinity of the beach, control boat salvage and assist in the defense of the beach.

Serving in the Navy means Waycaster is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

"We provide global security," Waycaster said.

There are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers while serving in the Navy. Waycaster is most proud of earning their Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin.

"Serving in the Navy means honor, courage, sacrifice, dedication and commitment," added Waycaster.
