Top-load agitator washing machines are commonly found among entry-level and midrange offerings in appliance stores. Unlike their hallowed contemporaries—high-efficiency (HE) top-loaders and front-load washing machines—they have a rapidly twisting column in the center of the inner tub to, ahem, agitate. That center post churns the laundry, so items rub against one another to help clean dirt and stains. (The other types use rapid-spinning drums, causing high friction between fabrics to achieve the same goal.)

You might think an extra physical element would up a washer’s cleaning ability, but the best top-load washers with agitators don’t always offer the best washing performance, Consumer Reports’ tests find. They do offer meaningful advantages, however—they can be faster, and often easier on your wallet, than other types of washing machines.

    Top-Load Agitators vs. Alternatives

Think of the various types of washers like you might view cars: Traditionally, agitator washers were the no-frills station wagons of the laundry aisle, while high-efficiency top-loaders and front loaders, respectively, raced in the muscle car and luxury lanes—loaded with shiny, sleek designs and advanced technology. So why are agitators often more popular than those other eye-candy washing machines? Let’s pop the hood on that.

    MORE ON LAUNDRY

Though top-load agitator washers are positioned as wallet-friendly alternatives to the aforementioned—and often costlier—varieties, manufacturers have started tweaking them with more of their feature-rich enhancements. That’s why you’ll see agitator top-loaders in our ratings that have stylish details, such as a stainless steel finish and a glass lid. Some also now have jumbo capacities, so you can do more laundry at once.

All those bells and whistles drive up the price of some of these models, which sometimes undercuts an agitator’s biggest selling point.

    Disadvantages of Top-Load Agitator Washers

The downsides? Performance, for one. And until recently, they washed less clothing per load. They can also be water hogs, typically using 20 gallons or more per load. If you value the longevity of your threads, know that top-load agitators tend to be rougher on fabrics than other types of washers.
