China: BYD Sold 593,743 Plug-In Electric Cars In 2021

NIO has just released its global electric car sales results for the month of January and it seems that the year 2023 begins in the red right from the start. The Chinese premium car brand reports that its total vehicle deliveries amounted to 8,506 last month, which is nearly 12 percent less than a year ago.

Tesla ended 2022 with notable incentives in many markets, including the US, China, and Europe. Surprisingly, it opened 2023 with even bigger promotions, reducing the prices across its entire lineup in the US, with some cuts as large as 20%. We just recently learned that Ford is following suit, but Volkswagen Group reportedly has no plans to jump on the bandwagon.

Volkswagen will stay away from making hydrogen-powered passenger cars in the next decade and will focus its efforts on further developing EV technology. The statements come from the brand’s CEO, Thomas Schafer, who spoke to the Spanish division of AutoBild at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Volkswagen is reportedly planning to build a second electric SUV in North America after production of the ID.4 started at its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee last year. According to a report from German business newspaper Handelsblatt, VW has decided last week to build a compact electric SUV smaller than the ID.4. The new model would be made from the middle of the decade either at its US plant in Chattanooga or in Puebla, Mexico. A spokesperson confirmed such plans to the publication but declined to comment on details.
