Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster underwent shoulder surgery earlier this season, and he was expected to miss the rest of the campaign. But in a surprise twist, the Steelers announced Thursday that Smith-Schuster has returned to practice, though he remains on IR for now ahead of the Wild Card Round game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Steelers wideout suffered the injury in Week 5 against the Denver Broncos and was placed on IR on Oct. 16. With this latest move, Pittsburgh has a 21-day window to activate him to the active roster.

It's unclear if Smith-Schuster will actually be activated for the playoff game against the Chiefs. But just the fact that he's back at practice is a nice surprise for the Steelers as they prepare to try to pull off a huge upset.

Smith-Schuster had been quiet this season before the injury, catching 15 passes for just 129 yards and zero touchdowns in five games. However, the 25-year-old isn't that far removed from being one of the best young wideouts in the game. He caught 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven scores in 2018, though he hasn't been able to come close to matching that since.

Even if the expectations would be low if Smith-Schuster returns, Roethlisberger would surely be happy to see another weapon out there against the mighty Chiefs. In addition to this Smith-Schuster news, fellow wideout James Washington has been activated off the COVID-19 list.
