Despite being more than a year old, Sony’s PS5 shortage is getting so bad that the company has to start relying on an old-favourite.

Though the months drag on, it’s still an absolute shitshow to get your hands on a PS5. These days finding one feels akin to actually stumbling upon pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Seems as though we aren’t the only ones feeling the heat of the PS5 shortage, though, with Sony itself also having to adjust with the times. The company’s solution: make a boatload more PS4s.

The news comes courtesy of Bloomberg, who reports that despite planning to stop production of the high-selling system at the end of 2021, Sony has gone ahead and back flipped on that decision. So just in case you’ve been holding out on buying a PS4 you’ll have all of 2022 to do so.

It’s worth noting that Sony flat out denies stopping PS4 production, telling Bloomberg “It is one of the best-selling consoles ever and there is always crossover between generations”. Fair point. It also uses parts and chips that aren’t as hotly in demand as the PS5.

Outside of budget-minded families though, it is a bit of a wonder who is still in the market for a PS4. Sure, upcoming releases like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok will launch for both systems, but their performance will almost certainly be weaker in comparison. Then there’s the fact that a refurbished PS4 Pro will still set you back a solid $468, so it’s no wonder why gamers are gravitating towards the PS5.

Our advice: if you have the money and the patience, try holding out through the PS5 shortage. And don’t forget about that incredibly nifty tracker as well.
