New York Jets get a polarizing player in mini-mock by Mel Kiper Jr., Todd McShay

On a podcast with ESPN NFL insider Field Yates, draft gurus Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay ran through a mini-mock draft that covered the first five picks of the NFL draft.

That includes the New York Jets‘ selection at No. 4, where Kiper Jr. and McShay mocked LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. to New York.

“He’s got the oily hips, he’s got the top-end speed, he has the length that you need at the cornerback position … if you’re just going off of value and position need, I think Stingley makes the most sense,” McShay says.

Acknowledging the concerns about Stingley, McShay says, “You got to go back and figure out the durability issues. Why wasn’t the production as good? He had six interceptions in 2019.”

As for the latter portion of that statement, McShay is referring to Stingley’s production drop-off after a breakout freshman season in 2019. Stingley had six interceptions and allowed a passer rating of 52.8 in 15 games that year. In 10 games the next two seasons, Stingley had no interceptions and allowed a passer rating of 86.6.

When it comes to the durability issues, Stingley was limited to 10 games throughout his sophomore and junior years due to various injuries, including foot and leg ailments.

Stingley and the Jets are a popular match among mock drafters. According to the website NFL Mock Draft Database, Stingley is the most commonly-mocked player to the Jets among 203 first-round mock drafts analyzed by the site, with 34.1% sending him to New Jersey.

So he’s been hurt and bad for the last 2 years, but we should take him at 4. This sounds more like an upside pick you take in the 3rd, not #4 overall.

Not happening. This guy sounds like another Dee Milliner. Joe Douglas will draft defensive and offensive linemen in the draft. He has said and believes in building in the trenches.I will go what he says.

These guys no nothing about the Jets. The Jets will not draft a cornerback with their 4th or for that matter their 10th pick. Especially one who is injury prone.

He’s also got the injury history. Dee Milliner anybody? If I remember correctly he also, had the “oily hips” “top end speed” the so called “best CB in the draft.” STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY! I don’t care if he’s an all-pro the risk is not worth the reward. This team needs good players and not guys that “might be” great players. If they have to pick at 4, and this will change obviously it’s very very early, I say the DE from Purdue Karlaftis (provided Hutchinson is off the board). He reminds me of JJ Watt. Same kind of player, and if you look at where Watt was drafted it wasn’t #1 overall. Then at #10 it has to be a WR. HAS TO BE. I liked Williams but now injured I think Burks is the guy. I think he’s Deebo Samuel. My dream is Thibodeaux is there at 4 and some 3-4 team wants him badly. I read everything about the Jets’ run defense and Thibodeaux isn’t going to help the Jets with that. The team doesn’t need another 250LB DE who gets smashed with the run but, I’m just a fan.
