The 2022 Toyota Tundra is just as tough as we should have all expected it to be. Toyota recently pulled another marketing stunt to show how rough and tumble the new Tundra’s bed is by dropping a series of increasingly heavy and rough materials and objects into it. This video proves the 2022 Toyota Tundra is still one of the toughest pickup trucks on the market.

Who makes the toughest pickup truck?

Toyota has long been the King of toughness. From the Toyota Land Cruiser to the Corolla, Everyone knows you can trust a Toyota to be nothing if not tough. Now,  the 2022 Toyota Tundra we see in this video is continuing the legacy of toughness in this PR stunt that shows how sturdy the bed is.

According to Autoevolution, the featured truck is a red 2022 Tundra with a double cab and a 6.5 ft bed. It also has the $2,360 TRD Sport Package, including double-spoke wheels; this Tundra SR5 retails at just under $50k.

The video shows a series of building materials and tools being unceremoniously thrown or dropped into the bed. The slow-mo drama shots show the Toyota pickup truck’s bodywork shudder and shake as these items collide with the black plastic bed liner.

Toyota is clearly excited to demonstrate the Tundra’s toughness with a boat anchor, a metal toolbox, paving bricks, red bricks, river stones, and 960 pounds of retaining wall blocks. The blocks really packed a punch, but the Tundra stood squarely and took it on the chin (bed).

What are the specs for the 2022 Toyota Tundra?

The Tundra isn’t the class leader in towing or payload capacity with a max of 12,000 and 1,940 lbs, respectively. Other big boys from the Big Three, like the Ford F-150, can pull 14,000 lbs and haul 3,325 lbs, which pretty well dominates the Tundra. However, the Tundra has its toughness.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has a fully-boxed frame and aluminum-reinforced composite bed that combines a sheet-molded compound with aluminum cross members. This over-built engineering at its finest.

Probably the most significant change to the Tundra 3rd generation model is the loss of the V8. Instead, the 2022 Tundra is powered by two completely new engines: a twin-turbocharged V6 and a twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid. Both engines are paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The base V6 makes 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The up-trim engine is an all-new i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain pumping out 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque.

How reliable is the new Tundra?

According to Autoevolution, the Tundra might need to do a little more shoring up of the mechanicals than proving its bed toughness. Apparently, according to some Toyota owner groups, the wastegate actuator is having some trouble performing its duties. This is not the kind of thing we expect from the Japanese giant. Surely, Toyota will have that issue licked in no time. Reliability is what Toyota does.
