Last year, Gucci’s current creative director Alessandro Michele celebrated the house’s centenary with a nostalgic runway extravaganza. For the autumn/winter 2021 collection, Michele riffed on former creative director Tom Ford’s innately sexy design approach, and reintroduced cult pieces – Gwyneth Paltrow’s ruby-red autumn/winter 1996 velvet suit included. As a result, interest in ’90s and Noughties-era Gucci by Tom Ford creations is at an all time high.
Hailey Bieber has gravitated towards the Texan designer’s leather pieces. Continuing her luxe leather streak – she’s been wearing The Matrix-esque trench coats on repeat – the model wore a ruched leather tank top from Tom Ford’s Gucci, straight leather trousers from The Attico, a Magda Butrym leather trench coat and Saint Laurent slingbacks.
Fellow models have been sharpening their elbows to snap up pieces from Ford’s Gucci. In October, vintage obsessive Bella Hadid packed a punch in a black cut-out top – from spring/summer 1998 – that she wore back-to-front for her 25th birthday celebrations.
Elsewhere Dua Lipa, Hailee Steinfeld and Kim Kardashian have revived his excellent LBDs – Kardashian is a fan of his outré footwear, too – while Rihanna was ahead of the curve with the Ford-era feathered jeans (spring/summer 1999) she wore a month before Michele’s April show.
