SHERMAN — An electrical issue was cited in a house fire Wednesday morning that resulted in the death of a 1-year-old and burns to two children.

Several fire departments responded to the blaze reported around 1:20 a.m. at 157 W. Main St. in Sherman.

In a news release, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said an adult woman and her five children were at home when the fire broke out. The woman was able to escape the property with her twin sons, age 4. Two other children, ages 12 and 8, had to jump from a second-story window in order to escape the flames.

A stairway inside the property was not accessible due to the fire, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The two older children were initially transported to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., for treatment of burns. The 1-year-old child, identified as Watson Taylor, died as a result of the fire.

The adult woman and her twin 4-year-olds were not injured, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The cause, following a probe by the county Fire Investigation Team, was determined to be due to an electrical issue “where the electric feed entered the residence.” The investigation remained ongoing Wednesday.

The fatality was the second in Chautauqua County in as many days. On Tuesday, 70-year-old Patricia Ulkins was pronounced dead after fire broke out at her 111 Center St. home in Fredonia. The blaze was reported just before 6 a.m. amid below-freezing conditions.

Five other occupants of the Center Street multi-family dwelling were displaced due to the fire. The property was later demolished out of safety concerns.

“It’s a tragedy with the loss of life in both incidents, and we keep them in our thoughts and prayers,” Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone said of the fires resulting deaths this week. “None of them are easy to handle, today especially, with the death of a child.”

The sheriff credited the first responders who assisted at both scenes. “They’ve done a great job, the majority of it being in difficult weather conditions and wind,” he said.
