GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With COVID cases on the rise in Northeast Wisconsin, some churches are making modifications to their programs and services.
“So our case numbers are really up, our positivity test is really up, so we had to make some modifications,” Atonement Lutheran Church Pastor Dennis Ellisen said.
Atonement Lutheran Church canceled Sunday school due to rising COVID cases.
“That’s in-person Sunday school for the month of January. Our hope is to resume in February, but we don’t know,” Ellisen said.
Atonement also moved confirmation classes online.
They continue to worship in person with extra mitigation strategies like required masking, social distancing and changes to the Eucharist.
The Diocese of Green Bay says its churches continue to worship in person as well.
Churches have socially distanced sections, and priests wear masks while offering communion.
“So these two protocols have been in place for many months now and seem to be working well,” Diocese of Green Bay Vicar General Fr. John Girotti said.
Girotti tells FOX 11 the Diocese continues to monitor COVID cases closely.
“We’re taking it day by day, there are many committees here at the Diocesan offices that monitor these things. Our hope is that we can learn to live with this virus and to keep going in proclaiming the gospel.”
