ORLANDO, Fla. — Just next to Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, construction continues on TRON Lightcycle Run, one of Disney World’s most anticipated new attractions.

What You Need To Know

  •  First announced in 2017, TRON Lightcycle Run is coming to Magic Kingdom

  •  In recent months, construction has ramped up on the attraction

  • Disney has not yet announced when TRON Lightcycle Run will open

The coaster, first announced at the D23 Expo in 2017, is based on the “Tron” films and will be similar to the TRON Lightcycle Power Run attraction at Shanghai Disneyland.

When Disney first revealed the attraction would be coming to Magic Kingdom, it was expected to open in time for Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration, which kicked off Oct. 1.

But delays, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have meant that fans will need to wait a little longer for the ride to finally open.

In November, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro shared an aerial view of the construction site during the Destination D23 event. But beyond that, not many updates have been released in recent months.

However, there’s certainly been a lot of progress at the attraction’s construction site.

The walkway that will lead to the attraction has taken shape and is now paved. Crews have also been working on the tunnel that will allow the Walt Disney World Railroad to pass through. The railroad is currently closed but began testing last month.

Other progress has been made on attraction’s large canopy, which is partially covered with blue netting material. More pieces have been added the structure recently. Once complete, the canopy will be covered and feature an impressive lighting effect.

Disney hasn’t shared an opening date for TRON Lightcycle Run yet. When the attraction does open, visitors will be able to enter the Grid and board their own two-wheeled lightcycle vehicle for a “thrilling race through the digital frontier.”

In the meantime, visitors can look forward to another coaster opening soon. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is expected to open this summer at Epcot.
