The automakers have a gang of new trucks and SUVs about ready to break this year. If you’re thinking about buying, you might want to wait until you can check these out. Here’s a preview of the many new trucks and SUVs about to hit dealers’ showrooms.

2023 Toyota Sequoia-finally a new model

The current Sequoia is a bit dated, but Toyota is primed to release a new version of the SUV. With the production of the new Tundra pickup, a Sequoia variant is imminent. As in previous years, both vehicles share the same basic platform and front sheet metal. There are lots of improvements including the new Toyota infotainment system with a 14-inch touchscreen. Wireless connectivity includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Power comes from a twin-turbo V6 configured as both hybrid and gas versions. It should be out before the end of 2022.

2024 Dakota-one of Ram’s totally new trucks

Ram has finally taken the plunge into the mid-size pickup category with the all-new Dakota. It will be based on the Jeep Gladiator platform, but cost less. Inside it will mimic the Ram 1500 interior, which has won praise across the board. Connectivity is a given with the Stellantis Uconnect system. Power will be from the 3.6-liter V6 found in numerous Stellantis vehicles. Possibly a 3.0-liter diesel might also be available. 

2024 Honda Prologue

An all-electric crossover is coming from Honda called the Prologue. Arriving sometime in 2023, it will use GM’s Ultium battery platform. The estimated cost will be around $45,000. With the Ultium system 100-kWh battery, expect 300 miles of range. This is the same setup GM is using in the Hummer and Lyriq, which will cost substantially more, so if the EV GM platform is of interest to you, this might be the cheapest way to slide into it. An Acura version is also rumored to be in the works. 

2023 Ford Ranger-an entirely new truck is coming

The next Ranger is all-new and has already been shown for other markets, so we know a bit more about it. It should be in Ford showrooms later this year as a 2023 model. A 2.3-liter turbo-four will power the Ranger with a hybrid version too. Both a 10-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmission will be available, with four-wheel drive an option. Both an extended cab and crew cab will be offered, along with two different bed lengths. Of note is that the current payload is 7,500 lbs, so the new Ranger should match or beat that. 

2023 Ford Fusion Active-from station wagon to crossover 

Taking a page from Subaru’s Outback, Ford is using its European Mondeo wagon for the Active. Lifted with plastic cladding and wheel arches, it is a station wagon parading as a crossover, but so what. At under $30,000 it makes for an attractive alternative to the mostly tall crossovers available today. Plus, it has all-wheel drive. A hybrid or plug-in hybrid system is believed to be part of the Active’s program. The 2.5-liter EcoBoost four will be standard. The Ford Sync infotainment system will keep drivers and passengers connected. 

2023 Ford Bronco Raptor is one of the most anticipated SUVs coming

Everyone seems to be waiting for a Raptor version of the Bronco, to be called Warthog. Fox Live Wire dampers, 37-inch tall off-road tires, rear anti-roll bar, and the wider stance are all part of the package. Other performance upgrades will distinguish the Warthog, including larger axles and beefed suspension. Ford’s twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 will power the SUV, which will feature Ford’s advanced four-wheel-drive system. Rumors are it will only be available as a four-door. Price is expected to be in the mid-$60,000 range. Hopefully, the Bronco’s top woes will be done by the Warthog’s debut.

2023 Ferrari Purosangue SUV-enthusiasts can’t wait

If the Lamborghini Urus SUV is any indication, the Ferrari Purosangue should be a hit. Estimated to cost around $350,000, its exclusivity is guaranteed. Arriving later this year, we hope it comes with the V12 engine-maybe the 950 hp version from the LaFerrari? We expect it to also run the turbo V8. Ferrari has kept info on the Purosangue close to the vest, but we won’t have to wait much longer to take in its first SUV. 

2023 BMW XM

BMW design is a scattershot these days, with the coming 2023 XM looking like it takes cues from Toyota crossovers. Nonetheless, it will feature a 750 hp 4.4-liter V8 plug-in hybrid system. Inside an expansive display welcomes you, with both digital gauges and an infotainment center. Connectivity will include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with SiriusXM satellite radio and a premium sound system. The XM should be at BMW dealers before the end of this year.

2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale

Alfa Romeo needs new models, and something to tout going into 2022. The Tonale SUV could be it. This will be the first Alfa Romeo with a hybrid powertrain. The Tonale concept was first shown back in 2019, so it has been a long gestation period. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive will be offered. A turbo-four engine will combine with an electric motor in the rear. Expect a 10.3-inch infotainment screen to be included, with some interesting added content. “Alfista” and “Paddock” will be included, with Alfista connecting the Alfa community, and Paddock offering Alfa components and upgrades. 

2022 GMC Hummer-the new GM EV truck has arrived

Much has already been written about the GMC Hummer, which has been shown for over a year. The all-electric truck picks up on excess where the previous Hummer left off, starting with 1,000 hp. First Edition Hummers have just now started trickling to customers with the $112,595 price tag. At almost 10,000 lbs, you don’t want to be t-boned in one of these. But so far our encounters have been pleasant.
