With another year well behind us, many companies and people have been looking back at the year prior alongside all the crazy things that happened. There was an absolute heap of game releases, several events hyping up upcoming releases, and plenty more shown off. PlayStation saw a particularly successful year, especially with a good handful of their games announced for PC (which are set to release this month). Today though, the team wanted to get a big picture of what PlayStation fans were interested in throughout 2021, and thus released their lists for the most downloaded games in various categories. As you may or may not have expected, both FIFA and NBA led the charge in several categories.
The PlayStation 5 is a strong indicator of this, with NBA 2K22 and FIFA 22 topping the North American and EU charts respectively. They were closely followed by Call of Duty: Vanguard, including plenty of other great titles such as It Takes Two, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Over on the PlayStation 4 side of things, Grand Theft Auto V was the obvious winner across both categories, though was beaten out in the EU by FIFA 22. One particularly random but interesting game to place highly here was The Forest, which was released several years ago.
For our good friends on PSVR, Beat Saber was the clear winner across both platforms, closely followed by Job Simulator. Meanwhile, in free-to-play, Fortnite was unsurprisingly the strongest winner. It was quickly followed by Call of Duty: Warzone, Rocket League, and Apex Legends vying for the top spots. If you’re curious regarding the rest of the rankings, including a 6th place Among Us ranking despite releasing last month, check out all the lists on the official blog post.
What do you think of the most downloaded PlayStation games for 2021? Are these surprising, or a completely expected set of winners? Let me know!
