Apple TV+ picks up 12 SAG Award nominations thanks to ‘CODA’, ‘Ted Lasso’, and others

On a yearly basis, the Screen Actors Guild Awards announce their nominations for that year’s winners in film and shows. So, we’re right on target with this year’s nominations. And as we’ve come to learn over the last couple of years or so, Apple TV+ is a contender.

And that’s certainly the case this year. Apple TV+ has announced today that it has earned a dozen nods from the SAG Awards this year. What’s more, many of those nominations are for leading categories including outstanding performances in an ensemble cast. Both Apple’s films and series are included in the mix.

From today’s announcement:

Today the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards announced that Apple TV+ has been recognized with 12 SAG Award nominations across Apple Original films and series including “CODA,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” “Ted Lasso” and “The Morning Show.”

With the nominations now out there in the wild, it’s all about waiting to see who the winners are. We’ll need to wait until Sunday, February 27, 2022, to find out, though.

Here are how the nominations for the 2022 SAG Awards break down:

Films

  • CODA
    • Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
    • Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role: Troy Kotsur

Apple’s sensation “CODA” earned two historic SAG Award nominations. Troy Kotsur received recognition for his moving performance, landing a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, and becoming the very first solo Deaf actor to receive an individual SAG Award nomination. The remarkable “CODA” cast, which is comprised of several actors who are deaf, was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, making history as the first time a predominantly Deaf cast was recognized by SAG in the ensemble category.

  • The Tragedy of Macbeth
    • Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role: Denzel Washington

Series

  • The Morning Show
    • Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
    • Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series: Billy Crudup
    • Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series: Jennifer Aniston
    • Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series: Reese Witherspoon
  • Ted Lasso
    • Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
    • Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series: Jason Sudeikis
    • Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series: Brett Goldstein
    • Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series: Hannah Waddingham

Apple is raking in the nominations — and the wins. Which is good for both the streaming service and the people subscribing to it, because it means there is some good stuff to watch. Maybe not a lot, still, but quality over quantity, right?
