Every time January rolls around, there seems to be an endless array of content encouraging people to turn over a new leaf, set some goals, intentions, or, ahem, resolutions for the new year, or generally take stock of how to have their best year yet.

Reese Witherspoon is taking part this year. The actress recently took to Instagram to share that she's "working towards" some new habits to help improve her daily life, and they're all very practical and productive. "I've been thinking a lot about habits lately, like walking the dog every day," the actress says in a video featuring her dog, Major. As if on cue, Major gave his mom a few smooches, before Witherspoon reveals that her friend sent her a book called Atomic Habits, which encourages self-growth through small, manageable changes to daily habits. "So if you're doing something that's 1 percent better for you every single day, you're gonna get one percent better every day," Witherspoon summarizes in the video. "If you're doing something that's one percent worse for you every day, you're gonna get worse every day." (

In the caption of her post, Witherspoon shared the habits she's "really working on," writing, "1. Start the day with a big glass of water. 2. Get 10 mins of outdoor light. @Hubermanlab recommends morning light. 3. Spend 30 - 60 mins reading without distraction everyday. 4. In bed by 10pm. *no late night TV binges. Try to get 8 hours of rest!" (

And it's true: All of Witherspoon's habits are backed by science and will help you stay well hydrated, soak up all of nature's morning goodness, reduce stress by allowing your mind to disconnect, and prep your mind and body for a solid night's snooze without the stimulation of devices or your go-to TV show.

It didn't take long, however, for Ina Garten to hit the comments section on Witherspoon's post to share her own list, made up of less traditional ideas than the goals Witherspoon is tackling.

"To quote @reesewitherspoon - that sounds great but I'm probably not doing any of those things! LOL!!" the TV host commented. "My formula is easier to follow: 1. Drink more large cosmos 2. Stay up late watching addictive streaming series, 3. Stay in bed in the morning playing Sudoku instead of reading a good book. 4. Spend more time (safely) with people you love. In a pandemic, I do what I can! ❤️❤️❤️." (

No one can blame you for adopting Garten's approach, especially in light of everything that's unfolded over the past few years. And you'd be far from alone — the hilarious response has racked up thousands of likes and hundreds of replies, suggesting The Barefoot Contessa's comment struck a chord. So whether you're in camp Witherspoon and you're actively working on adopting productive daily habits for 2022, or if you're throwing caution to the wind like Garten and doing more of what makes you happy despite what you "should" be doing, know that it's all good to give yourself as much grace as you can. You're doing great, and there's no reason to beat yourself up if you forgo an early bedtime in favor of a late night streaming sesh. You've got the Ina Garten seal of approval, and there's not much that's better than that.
