Former Lewiston state lawmaker Aaron von Ehlinger, who was convicted of rape last month, has requested a new trial on the basis of insufficient evidence. Von Ehlinger was convicted April 29th of raping a 19-year-old Statehouse intern after a jury found him guilty on a felony count of rape, and not guilty on a felony count of forcible penetration with a foreign object. A sentencing date of July 28th was set following von Ehlinger’s conviction.
Three-term incumbent Sen. Carl Crabtree, of Grangeville, was one of 19 House and Senate Republicans who lost their reelection bids in Tuesday’s primary election. The 69-year-old Crabtree squared off against Riggins businesswoman Cindy Carlson in a four-way race for the 7th Legislative District Senate seat. Lewiston High School coach Keith Stuffle and Heather Rogers, of Lewiston, were also in the race. No Democrats or minor party candidates filed for the race, so Carlson is virtually assured of victory in November.
Clyde Ewing has been found guilty of first-degree murder on the fifth day of his trial. The jury deliberated for about two hours to reach the verdict this afternoon. Ewing and his son, Demetri, were convicted in the shooting death of Samuel Johns on Jan. 8, 2021, at 1706 Seventh Ave. in Lewiston. Demetri, who was 16 years old at the time of the shooting, was found guilty on April 22. The two were tried separately for the same charge of first-degree murder. A status conference for Clyde Ewing is scheduled for Thursday and his sentencing is set for July 21. Demetri Ewing’s sentencing is scheduled for June 16.
Authorities say investigators are continuing to wait on test results and other information before making further statements about a deadly shooting in Nezperce last Friday. Lewis County Sheriff Jason Davis could not say when that information will be available to the public. Officials identified the shooting victim as 40-yeaer-old Damien Giles of Nezperce.
