The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is here after months of leaks and rumours. Initial benchmarks show that the RTX 3080 12 GB offers better gaming performance than the RTX 3080, almost to the extent that it matches the RTX 3080 Ti. However, the increased performance comes at significant temperature and power costs.

NVIDIA announced the RTX 3080 12 GB yesterday, its latest high-end desktop graphics card. For some reason, the company refused to provide press or its board partners with pre-release drivers though, preventing anyone from providing day one reviews. Thankfully, eTeknix has published numerous benchmark results for NVIDIA's new graphics card, which we have embedded below.

Additionally, the YouTube channel has shared a GPU-Z screenshot of the RTX 3080 12 GB, confirming more specifications, such as its texture and pixel fillrates. Incidentally, GPU-Z reports the driver date as January 6, 2022, so the driver was ready for press before the card's announcement. Please note that the 1.89 GHz boost clock is a factory overclock. By default, the RTX 3080 12 GB has a 1.71 GHz boost clock, matching the RTX 3080 10 GB.

Unsurprisingly, the RTX 3080 12 GB shades its 10 GB sibling in most games, including Borderlands 3 and Dirt 5. For reference, eTeknix benchmarked the RTX 3080 12 GB with a Ryzen 9 5900X, 32 GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum (DDR4-3600) RAM and a ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero motherboard. Ultimately, the RTX 3080 12 GB is not much of an upgrade from the original RTX 3080 in performance terms. Still, it nears the RTX 3080 Ti in most gaming benchmarks, as the graphs below show.

However, eTeknix notes that the RTX 3080 12 GB, at least the MSI SUPRIM X version, runs over 1 dB(A) quieter than the equivalent RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti. The RTX 3080 12 GB consumes more power than the RTX 3080 Ti under load, though. Similarly, while NVIDIA has raised the RTX 3080 12 GB's TDP by 30 W compared to the RTX 3080, eTeknix recorded a 37 W uplift.

Strangely, the RTX 3080 12 GB runs much hotter than either the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti too. To reiterate, NVIDIA has not set an MSRP for the RTX 3080 12 GB. According to eTeknix, even NVIDIA's board partners do not know how much they should charge for the RTX 3080 12 GB. As such, early listings are several hundred dollars and euros more expensive than their RTX 3080 10 GB counterparts.
