The original version of the lens was one of the most impressive I have ever used, offering reliable performance and great image quality in a package that was significantly smaller than traditional 24-70mm f/2.8 options and, of course, much cheaper. While you might miss out on the extra reach at the wide end, given the 28-75mm f/2.8's price, you can add the 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD for a combination price that is only about as much as a first-party 24-70mm f/2.8.
