UPDATE: Friday, January 14th: The Hueytown Police Department announced that the District Attorney's Office has reviewed this case, and determined there is enough probably cause to charge the child's mother in the death. An investigation is underway in Hueytown after a toddler died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday morning.

The Hueytown Police Department said officers and firefighters responded to the 1400 block of 26th Avenue at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday on reports of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At the scene, officers found a 2-year-old had been shot.

Hueytown fire personnel attempted life-saving efforts and transported the toddler to Children's Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.
