Station 19 has had its future confirmed just one day after its parent show Grey's Anatomy was renewed for its 19th season, with ABC choosing to pick up Station 19 for season six.

Deadline reports that the drama series, which focuses on the personal and professional lives of the team of firefighters working at Seattle Fire Station 19, will return in the 2022-23 US TV season alongside Grey's.

Krista Vernoff will continue in her role as executive producer and showrunner on both shows for the new season, having been overseeing both series since 2019.

"It's a privilege to tell stories of our heroic first responders, who on our show and in real life put their lives on the line every day to keep us all safe," she said following the renewal news.

"I'm so grateful to Disney and ABC for the early pickup for season six of Station 19! It's a tribute to the incredible work of our talented cast, crew, writers and creative team, as well as the dedication of our loyal fans who tune in every week."

Craig Erwich, president, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, added: "The riveting storytelling and passionate fan base that Station 19 continues to cultivate is a testament to the unrelenting dedication of Krista Vernoff and the incredibly talented cast and crew.

"Coupled with yesterday's renewal of Grey's Anatomy, the return of Station 19 ensures more crossover opportunities and a thrilling night of appointment television."

The renewal of both series opens up the possibility of further crossovers between the shows, with the crossover episodes that aired last year featuring the shock death of an original Station 19 character.

Fans were devastated to see long-time firefighter Dean Miller (Okieriete Onaodowan) pass away after being seriously injured in an explosion, despite the best efforts of his colleagues to rush him to Grey Sloan Memorial hospital for treatment.

Following his departure, Onaodowan described his time on the series as "a pleasure", saying: "I am grateful I got to work with the most loving, kind and dedicated crew in network TV.

"Most importantly, thanks to the fans for showing Dean so much love. I hope he has inspired you to change your world for the better. Be the change!"

Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 air on ABC in the US. They air on Sky Witness in the UK with selected episodes also available on NOW and Disney+.
