'Spider-Man' Director Jon Watts Developing A New 'Final Destination' Film For HBO Max

If it worked for “Halloween,” “Scream,” and a million other horror franchises, why not “Final Destination?” That’s seemingly what HBO Max is thinking with moving forward on a new relaunch of the popular early-2000s teen horror franchise, “Final Destination.” But this time, the franchise is being relaunched by a filmmaker who is in high demand right now, Jon Watts.

According to THR, Jon Watts has come on board as a producer of a new “Final Destination” film that is expected to relaunch the franchise. The film, which will debut on HBO Max, is still in the early stages, but it’s clearly getting moved ahead with the success of legacy sequels such as the aforementioned “Halloween” and the upcoming “Scream.”

The “Final Destination” films follow a new group of people each film and tell the story of one person who has a premonition that they will die. They then prevent the premonition from coming true, which in turn, forces the specter of death to follow them and try to kill them in various other ways, typically looking like accidents.

Though Watts did provide the treatment and the story for the new “Final Destination” film, the feature will actually be written by the duo of Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick, who worked on the new “Scream” legacy sequel.

Watts is probably best known for being the filmmaker behind the hugely successful “Spider-Man” films from Marvel Studios, including the just-released, record-breaking “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Before that, he was involved in thrillers, helming films such as “Cop Car” and “Clown.” You would have to assume the main reason why Watts isn’t directing the new “Final Destination” film is because his slate is already busy with a new action film starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, as well as the forthcoming “Fantastic Four” film from Marvel Studios.

It’s unclear when “Final Destination 6” will hit HBO Max, though you have to assume the studio is going to want this moving forward quickly to capitalize on the nostalgia factor.
