Eagles hold off Emeralds

Staff reports

ENGADINE — The Engadine girls basketball team recorded a 47-43 non-conference win against Manistique on Monday night.

Leah French scored 31 points to lead the Eagles (6-3 overall). Lauren King, Imani Miller, Zoey Sowers and Tessa Paquin all scored four points each. French and Paquin also added 12 rebounds apiece.

The Eagles led 21-17 at halftime and 35-25 through three quarters, then held off a late run by the Emeralds.

“I feel this was a great learning experience,” Engadine coach Roger French said. “We have not been in many close games and we need this as we continue to learn. Offensively we struggled in the paint, but were able to hit some from the arc to compensate for their size.”

The Eagles defeated the Emeralds for a second time this season. Engadine beat Manistique 54-29 on Dec. 14.

“Defensively we just did enough as Manistique was ready for our rebounding ability after the first time we played them.” French said. “I think we surprised them the first time so it was good to see the team come together in the little things to get this win.”

Engadine's game this upcoming Friday against Brimley was postponed. The Eagles resume play with a home game against Mid Peninsula on Wednesday, Jan. 12.
