Pokémon Legends Arceus is hitting store shelves later this month. And with that, fans are on the lookout for any updates—official or rumors—that might come our way before the game is officially released. Many details have yet to surface about the Sinnoh origin story. So far, we've seen a mix of updates and trailers showing Hisuian forms, a new battle system, and potentially a change to the evolutions mechanic. Now, a new leak suggests that we might see some interesting changes coming for the titular legendary Pokémon, Arceus.

Arceus plates tease changes in Pokémon

On Saturday, January 8, popular insider Riddler_Kru divulged new details about Pokémon Legends Arceus on Twitter. The mysterious hint revealed that the upcoming title would include 18 Arceus Plates. This perplexing new information sent everyone brainstorming what those plates might mean.

Then, on Monday, content creator SoulSilverArt cracked the code. “There’s currently 17 [plates] in existence for every type except for normal,” the tweet said. “A new plate could mean a number of things—but it could further hint that it may give Arceus some kind of new form.”

The Pokémon franchise doesn't always make big swooping changes to its mechanics, but on occasion, some exciting updates do shake up the game. Back in Generation VI, fans saw the introduction of the Fairy type, and that change brought the Mythical plates tally to 17. With the count at 18, many are now speculating a new type could soon arrive in the Pokémon world.

New form could arrive in Legends Arceus

It's an interesting possibility for sure. Considering that Legends Arceus is an origin story, it definitely seems surprising and a huge dent in the timeline to have more types in Hisui, the past version of Sinnoh, rather than in the future. Still, it could be an interesting aspect of the storyline, or simply just a way for Pokémon to try and balance out type effectiveness and weaknesses a bit more.

The more skeptical folk in the community also caution that the new plate might just mean that the Normal type will finally get a plate of its own. However, the argument against that is, Arceus naturally already comes as a Normal type, so it wouldn't make sense to give the Mythical creature a separate plate from its actual type. After all, the type-changing mechanics for Arceus involve removing a plate to make the legendary return to its normal form.

Riddler has been accurate for years now, so excitement is rising all throughout the Pokémon community to see what the 18th plate might actually turn out to be. (Still, at best, don't get your hopes too high on what is still a rumor for now). Another possibility is some new form, similar to a Hisuian form, for Arceus, but we'll have to see if any official details get revealed in the coming days.
