We've been treated to a lot of intriguing photos from the set of Batgirl over the past 24 hours or so, all of which have given us a first look at the "new" DC Extended Universe.

The Flash is going to give this world the "Flashpoint" treatment, with Michael Keaton's Batman replacing Ben Affleck's Dark Knight, and, if recent rumours are to be believed, the introduction of new Justice League as well. We've already seen hints that Black Canary will be a key player in the DCEU moving forward, while Batman once having a Robin is obviously significant on a number of levels (there have already been rumblings Batgirl will lead to that long-overdue Nightwing movie).

Now, it looks like we can add another rogue to this version of Gotham City: Hugo Strange.

Strange is a brilliant but disturbed psychologist with an obsessive vendetta against Batman. In addition to being one of The Dark Knight's earliest foes, preceding even the Joker and Catwoman, he is also one of the first and few to successfully deduce that Batman and Bruce Wayne are one and the same.

There's nothing to suggest we'll see any of that in Batgirl, but if we pay a visit to Arkham Asylum, then it's feasible we'll see Strange in some form. Ultimately, that poster in the Tweet below might just be an Easter Egg, but the HBO Max movie is clearly going to feature heaps of world-building.

Batgirl is expected to be released on HBO Max sometime later this year.

I'm still on the fence as to how much of a reboot The Flash is gonna be. Only removing two or three movies from continuity and replacing one hero doesn't sound like a reboot atleast.

Anyway, Hugo Strange? Now that would be really cool. Rather see him in the Reeverse, but I'll take this too. About time we get to see him on the big screen

@bkmeijer -

His mainstream debut thanks to Arkham City was long overdue. Would have loved to see him Nolan's trilogy.

@DrReedRichards - same. Could've seen him as Bane's boss in TDKR

@bkmeijer - I’m starting to think it’s more going to open up the multiverse. Leave us with the understanding all of these films could be in different universes slightly different than the others. That way they can make all the billion Batman films they’ve dreamed of and they won’t have to worry about them contradicting each other

@Twenty23Three - I think getting the general audience to understand the multiverse is quite a task.

Especially so soon into a franchise that hasn't even established what it wants to be itself. Atleast we now know what the MCU is truly about before we're thrown into the multiverse.

Is DC intent on torpedoing their own movie franchise?

@Urubrodi - He does, imo.
Also the body, the looks, and James Gunn owns him a favor.

@TheHumanSpider2 - You don't cast Bane as Strange, although he may be just as compelling. My choice is still B.D. Wong...again.

Would be so great to see Hugo Strange in a movie. Such an underrated villain. One of the best things about Arkham City.

Why are we wasting good Batman villains in movies without Batman?

Quit doing the same villains in the main Batman movies. Black Mask and Hugo Strange could have been fantastic villains for a Batman movie. I get we haven't gotten the Ridler in a while, so I'm cool with that. But still.

This is likely an easter-egg & nothing more, I wouldn't worry about it.
I'm very curious about Reeve's plans for villains is, him taking inspiration from the 60's show has lead to the big 4 from back then being in his 1st movie (if the Joker rumors are true), so aside from the inevitable Joker movie I wonder where else he will go with it, so many villains and so little time to work them in if this just winds up as a solid trilogy.
