REPORTER: JUST IN TONIGHT -- OKLAHOMA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SENDING FIVE MORE SCHOOLS TO "REMOTE LEARNING." SO MANY STUDENTS OUT SICK, BUT ALSO, SO MANY TEACHERS! TONIGHT-- WE ARE LOOKING AT NUMBERS FROM LOCAL SCHOOLS. >> THE BEST, SAFEST PLACE FOR OUR KIDS TO BE IS IN SCHOOL SO WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO EPKE OUR DOORS OPEN. BUT THERE COMES A POINT IN TIME WHERE, AS KIDS ARE COMING TO SCHOOL, AND WE CAN'T FIND ADULTS -- SPOS REPORTER: TODAY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF OKLAHOMA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS DOCTOR SEAN MCDANIEL GIVING AN UPDATE AS MORE AND MORE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS CALL OUT SICK. STARTING WITH STAFF NUMBERS. >> I GOT AN UPDATED NUMBER THAT 284 AT 9;30 THIS MORNING HAS MOVED TO 309. REPORTER: 309 STAFF OUT WITH A POSITIVE TEST. >> IF YOU LOOK AT STUDENTS, AS OF 9:30 THIS MORNING WE HAD 485 POSITIVE STUDENTS. SINCE 9:30 THIS MORNING, THAT NUMBER HAS MOVED FROM 485 TO 582. REPORTER: UNLIKE OTHER DISTRICTS, OKCPS REQUIRES STUDENTS TO QUARANTINE IF THEY'VE BEEN EXPOSED. IT'S A REQUIREMENT, NOT JUST A RECOMMENDATION. >> AT 9:30 THIS MORNING WE HAD 2,221 STUDENTS IN QUARANTINE. RIGHT BEFORE THIS MEETING, THAT NUMBER HAD GROWN TO 2,383. SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT STUDENTS WHO ARE ABSENT DUE TO COVID, WE ARE OVER 3,000 KIDS. REPORTER: BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER, MULTIPLE OKCPS SCHOOLS HAVE NOW GONE VIRTUAL FOR THE TIME BEING. WE ASKED OTHER SCHOOLS AROUND THE METRO ABOUT THEIR NUMBERS. IN EDMOND -- 291 STUDENTS AND 64 STAFF ARE OUT WITH COVID. I'M TOLD THAT'S A 1.3 POSITIVE RATE. MUSTANG TELLS ME AS OF THEIR LAST REPORT JANUARY 5, 159 STUDENTS AND STAFF WERE OUT, EITHER TESTING POSITIVE OR BEING A CLOSE CONTACT. ADDING THAT NUMBER HAS GONE UP, BUT THEY WON'T HAVE AN ACCURATE NUMBER UNTIL WEDNESDAY. YUKON'S LAST UPDATE FROM JANUARY 6 SHOWS 88 STUDENTS HAVE TESTED POSITIVE. 23 STAFF ARE POSITIVE. 260 STUDENTS ARE IN QUARANTINE, AND EIGHT STAFF MEMBERS. WE'VE ALSO JUST LEARNED, PRE-K AT MUSTANG ELEMENTARY WILL BE CANCELLED FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. AND IN EL RENO, THEY SAY DUE TO FACULTY CASES OF COVID, HILLCREST AND ROSE WITCHER ELEMENTARY, HEAD START THRU SECOND GRADE WILL BE DISTANCE LEARNING FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. WE ARE STARTING TO SEE A LOT OF SHIFTS TO VIRTUAL. AS THEY ROLL IN, WE ARE UPDATING THE KOCO APP

The recent COVID-19 surge has forced some Oklahoma schools to go virtual.The new semester just started and already, Oklahoma schools are scrambling to keep the doors open. As of Monday night, Oklahoma City Public Schools moved five more schools to remote learning.Both students and teachers are out sick."The best, safest place for our kids to be is in school so we're doing everything we can to keep our doors open. but there comes a point in time where, as kids are coming to school, and we can't find adults," said Dr. Sean McDaniel, the superintendent of OKCPS.McDaniel gave an update as more and more teachers and students call out sick. According to McDaniel, that the 284 staff members with a positive test as of 9:30 Monday morning is now at 309.Additionally, McDaniel said that there were 485 positive students at 9:30 Monday morning, and the number has moved to 582 since.Unlike other school districts, OKCPS requires students to quarantine if they’ve been exposed.
