Could The Ravens Pursue Tyrann Mathieu In Free Agency?

The Baltimore Ravens just missed out on a chance to get into the NFL playoffs this season in what was a brutally disappointing end to the year. Lamar Jackson missed a lot of time at the end of the season due to injury and the Ravens will have to go back to the drawing board this offseason. Making a splash on the defensive side of the football should be a priority and a free agent like Tyrann Mathieu could make perfect sense.

Remember, the Ravens had interest in signing Mathieu back in 2019 before he chose to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. Mathieu coming back around to Baltimore would be an intriguing and perfect fit for both parties involved.

Pro Football Focus mentioned the Ravens as a potential landing spot for Mathieu this offseason. It’s something that fans should keep a very close eye on entering free agency this year.

Mathieu frequently finds himself on “most versatile” lists, and his snap distribution backs those claims up. Since joining Kansas City in 2019, Mathieu has played over 600 snaps in deep, box and slot alignments. The Ravens reportedly had interest in Mathieu back in 2019 and could use his playmaking ability at safety.

Mathieu is coming off of another solid season with the Chiefs in 2021. He racked up 76 total tackles to go along with a sack, three fumble recoveries, three interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and six defended passes. Those numbers show why the Ravens should strongly consider pursuing Mathieu once again.

There are very few safeties capable of making the plays that Mathieu makes. He is fast and disruptive in the defensive backfield. That is exactly what the Ravens were missing this season.

At 29 years of age, Tyrann Mathieu will be looking to cash in on at least one more big contract. If the Ravens truly want to get their defense back to playing at a dominant level, they should pull out the checkbook for Mathieu. He is exactly the kind of fit that this team has been needing.

That being said, there are plenty of other teams around the NFL who would also love to sign Mathieu. He is going to be a hot commodity in free agency. The Ravens will need to come out aggressive from the start if they want to land him.

Expect to hear quite a few rumors surrounding the Ravens this offseason. Mathieu may not end up in Baltimore, but it looks like a match made in heaven on the outside looking in.
