If you read my recent Tweet (embedded below), you’ll see a picture of a strange aluminum iPhone housing next to a Space Gray Magic Mouse. That’s not the clearest image we have, but it’s the clearest we could share.. Remember, we need to protect our sources. But, if you look at the image, you’ll see something odd: the camera module.
It looks like a smaller version of the camera system on the iPhone X and iPhone XS.
To be clear, we don’t know what it is. It could be the iPhone SE 3, or the iPhone SE 4, maybe neither. I ran this image through many sources and got the same answer from all of them: they don’t know for sure.
From what I know, the iPhone SE 3 will look exactly like the current iPhone SE, so there’s no reason to believe that the camera module will get such a redesign. But I also don’t think it’s acceptable to release a phone with a single rear camera in 2022.
This argument isn’t convincing enough, especially when we are talking about a company like Apple. Apple sometimes acts like the rest of the world doesn’t exist, and it was only them making smartphones. If I had to guess, I’d say that this is just a prototype that we’ll never get to see anyway.
However, I do have some concerns this time around. For one, there’s the way Apple handled this design. I can’t tell you much because I have to protect my sources, but believe me when I say this isn’t the typical prototype. There was a lot of security involving this particular design, and even a board member was involved in the process. Something that doesn’t normally happen.
Usually, the design team works on it, and then a member of the board gets the design and reviews it, but this time the executive oversaw it closely. I can’t tell you who he was, but I can tell you that you’ve definitely seen him at Apple events.
All of this together makes me very suspicious of this product design. I can’t give you a definitive answer today, but you can be sure that I’ll continue to investigate the matter and keep you updated here and on my Twitter account as soon as I have more information to share.
To conclude this article, I’d like to say that I still think that this is just a design prototype that will never see the light of day, as Apple is working on dozens of different models until they decide on one.
Still, the atmosphere surrounding it makes me think that we might be dealing with something completely different. I don’t know yet, and neither do my sources. Until I get more information about it, all we have is speculation.
