Is Super Smash Bros. 64 coming to Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo is a very tight-lipped company that doesn't like to reveal anything ahead of time. But a recent datamine found that the Nintendo 64 virtual console in the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack may be getting 38 more games. This includes Super Smash Bros. 64.

A tweet from MondoMega shared screenshots from the N64 app's inner workings. According to the picture, 38 Nintendo 64 titles are planned for the Nintendo Switch Online including Mario Party, Majora's Mask, and Super Smash Bros.

This isn't too far-fetched. The virtual library already has Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Super Mario 64, Mario Tennis, Legends of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and many other childhood staples from the Nintendo 64.

The Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack was first launched in October 2021. It brought popular retro titles to the Nintendo Switch, including Paper Mario on December 10. The expansion pack is $49.99 per year, which has been seen as a bit pricey for the quality. The emulation quality for the N64 has been seen as subpar.

With the emulator not keeping up with the game's original quality on the Nintendo 64, it's uncertain that Smash 64 fans will even want the game on the Switch. The competitive community has slowly been dwindling, however, and easy access to the older game will probably help increase interest in the original Super Smash Bros.

When is Smash 64 coming to the Nintendo Switch?

There is currently no official announcement detailing when the original Super Smash Bros. would be coming to the virtual N64 on the Switch. With the expansion pack first being launched in October, there is not a long history of drops to create a certain timeline of updates. Some Nintendo insiders do believe it's sometime in January, however.
