3-alarm fire breaks out in building that houses apartments, laundromat in Malden
Malden residents who live above a local laundromat have been displaced by a three-alarm fire that broke out in the building Monday evening.A Boston Architectural College student said she was inside her third-floor apartment above Oak Grove Laundry at 1 Grove St. when the fire started."I saw particles falling from the ceiling. It was when I got out that I saw that the ceiling is burning down, there is smoke everywhere," she said.The student said she rushed out of the building in her flip-flops, but good Samaritans came to her aid by giving her socks and buying her boots. A Malden police officer also provided her with gloves."I have lots of blessings today," she said.Brian Pham, whose parents own Oak Grove Laundry, said he was walking home from the train station when he saw multiple fire trucks outside of the building."I basically sprinted over here knowing that my parents are working. Luckily, they were already out," Pham said. "I have never seen anything like that. I was just in shock."No injuries were reported.Malden fire Chief Bill Sullivan said it appears the fire started in the back of the building, which houses six apartments, and quickly spread to the attic. He said the cold conditions made it tough for firefighters to get water on the flames."Anytime that you're playing with water in sub-freezing temperatures, you're going to run into icing conditions. So you've got to be sure of your footing," Sullivan said. "The ice takes over everything."Several roads in the area were closed as a result of the fire, and police asked the public to avoid Glenwood, Washington and Winter streets.The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services team from Lynn responded to the scene, according to a spokesperson for the organization.According to the Salvation Army spokesperson, the team is providing snacks, hydration, blankets and spiritual care on a cold night and will provide additional assistance to displaced residents.The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
