Euphoria has returned, and with it, a series of wild storylines that twist and turn out of control. Call it unrealistic, or take the devil’s advocate position and claim your high school experience was just like the East Highland High schoolers’ — we don’t care! Either way, while you’re watching, you may start to wonder if any of the stories are real. Was Mouse an infamous drug kingpin? Is Rue (Zendaya) a real person? Did parties like this actually happen somewhere in the world? Maybe. (But probably not, right?)

Season 2 of the hit HBO drama has veered into more violence, glitter, and completely bonkers drama. We started with an episode following Fez (Angus Cloud) that ultimately evolved into a full-on New Year’s Eve party. But is Euphoria based on a true story? Perhaps a book? What more Euphoria research can diehard fans compile to fill their days before Episode 2 releases? Let’s take a look.

Is Euphoria based on a book? What is Euphoria based on?

Euphoria isn’t based on a book; instead, the series is actually based on another series. That’s right: there’s a second Euphoria! The HBO original is based on an Israeli TV series of the same name that was released in 2012, following events that took place in the 1990s. Unfortunately, Euphoria (2012) isn’t streaming anywhere at the moment. You’ll just have to settle for the new version, for now.
