THREE ORGANIZATIONS FROM OUR AREA CAME TOGETHER TO FORM THE MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COLLECTIVE TO HELP ALL OF US KEEP OUR MENTAL IN CHE.CK JOINING US LIVE ON ZOOM TODAY IS DR. WHY DID YOU ALL COME TOGETHER FOR THIS? >> HPYAP NEW YEAR TO YOU AS WELL. THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IS THE SECOND PANDEMIC THAT WE ARE ENDURING .PEOPLE ARE HAVING A LOT OF DIFFICULTY. BEING ABLE TO KEEP TIRHE OWN MENTAL HEALTH IN CHECK. KEEPING THEIR OWN MINDS RIGHT. WE HAVE ENBE TASKED WHIT FINDING WAYS TO BE MORE CREATIVE IN HOW WE ASSIST PEOPLE WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS. THIS IS GOING BEYOND THE BORRSDE . IT IS THE WAY TO ADDRESS AIC. LARGER AUDIENCE. HELPING PEOPLE KNOW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO ACT AND IDENTIFY SITUATIONS. IT IS OUR RECKONING WITH THE LACK OF PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE AVAILABLE TO WRAP THEIR ARMS AROUND THE COMPLEXITY OF NEED RIGHT NOW. TO EQUIP AND PROVIDE CAPABILITY WITHIN COMMUNITIES TO DO A BETTER JOB WITH MANAGING THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS. RICHSTINA: THAT IS INCREDIBLE THAT YOU ARE COMING TOGETHER TO ADDRESS THIS. FOR THE PURPOSOFE TRAINGIN THE AVERAGE PERSON ON HOW TO IDENTIFY MENTAL ILLNESS AND UNDERSTAND IT BETTER. IN MOST CASES, ITS I A TOOL THAT CAN BE USED TO CREATE ALLIES ON BETWEEN THE PERSON IN NEED OF SERVICES AND THE PERSON EQUIPPED TO PROVIDE THE SERVIS.CE IF WE CAN TRAIN AS MANY PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITIES ANDOW HO T DO THAT, WE AS A CULTURE WILL BE MUCH BETTER R FOIT. Three Louisiana organizations partnered to create a new mental health collective.The Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI), the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) New Orleans and Metropolitan Human Services District (MHSD) formed the Mental Health First Aid Collective. MHFA is a nationally recognized best practice program that trains organizations, businesses, and individuals on how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders. New Orleans ranks 40th out of 64 parishes on health outcomes compared to the rest of the state.Prior to COVID-19, studies show Louisiana already faced shortages in the mental health workforce. The MHFA training gives people the necessary skills to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Programs specialize in adults, youth, teens, higher education, rural communities, older adults, veterans, workplace, fire and EMS, public safety, schools and faith/spiritual communities.The LPHI, NAMI- New Orleans and MHSD are recognized training partners of MHFA Training and offer this training to partners, communities, and individuals to advance behavioral health, community resilience, and disaster preparedness. The organizations’ instructors are certified to offer this MHFA skills-based training to help identify and refer someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis, with a culturally responsive lens. In this way, the collective aims to do mental health differently by coordinating equitable community outreach, collaborating across sectors, and improving general knowledge regarding mental health risk factors and resources in Louisiana.
