EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has responded to claims that the soap's cast is fearful of an "exodus" from the show following the news that Danny Dyer is leaving his role as Mick Carter.

It was confirmed on Saturday (January 8) that Dyer will be exiting EastEnders later in 2022 after nine years playing pub landlord Mick, with the BBC stating that the actor will depart "when his contract comes to an end later this year".

The Sun has now reported that other members of the soap's cast are concerned that further stars will follow in the footsteps of Dyer and fellow actor Maisie Smith, who left her role as Tiffany Butcher at the end of last year.

However, an EastEnders spokesperson has described any speculation about future exits inspired by Dyer's decision as "nonsense".

"To say any cast member is now considering their future on the show due to another cast member leaving is nothing but speculative nonsense," they told Digital Spy. "Danny's decision to leave the show is purely because he wants to try different roles."

EastEnders previously confirmed that the actor made his decision to leave a little while ago, with the soap planning a major storyline for Mick's departure.

"Danny has made Mick Carter an iconic character which we shall always be grateful for, however we won't be saying goodbye just yet as there's still quite some time – and plenty of explosive drama for Mick – to come before he departs Walford," they said.

Mick is currently facing a very difficult time after interference by Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) led to his split from wife Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), who is currently away from the Square.

After Mick is encouraged to get back in the dating game, Rainie Highway (Tanya Franks) realises that Mick and Linda have separated and she decides to follow Mick – leading to Mick suffering from a panic attack and collapsing.

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on BBC One.
