The Morning Show, unlike Mitch Kessler, lives on! (Too soon?)
Apple TV+ has renewed the drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon for Season 3, TVLine has learned.
The renewal comes with a behind-the-scenes switch: Charlotte Stoudt (Homeland, Fosse/Verdon) will take over as showrunner/executive producer, replacing Kerry Ehrin in the role. Ehrin, who is developing series with the streaming service under a previously announced overall deal, will continue as a consultant with the show.
The drama’s polarizing second season saw the death of Steve Carell’s Mitch Kessler, who in Season 1 had been outed as a habitual sexual abuser and fired from the titular morning show. Mitch spent most of Season 2 in Italy where, after a visit from his former co-anchor Alex (played by Aniston), he died in a car accident that took place around the start of the COVID-19 lockdown. On a related note, Alex contracted COVID during her time in Italy. Meanwhile, fellow Morning Show host Bradley Jackson (played by Witherspoon) started dating a woman (Julianna Margulies’ Laura Peterson), dealt with a visit from her troubled brother and was on the receiving end of a surprising “I love you” from boss Cory Elison (played by Billy Crudup) in the finale. (For more on the hour, read our interview with Witherspoon and Crudup.)
The Season 2 finale began streaming on Nov. 19, 2021.
What do you think about The Morning Show‘s fate? Sound off in the comments!
I am very, very surprised its coming back at all. That second season sucked the big one. Don’t know what happened, but it was rather horrible. Instead of being about a TV show, it became Dallas, or Dynasty (the original).
All of the stars should be thanking their lucky stars!
Writing good comedy is the hardest type of writing to do. Easier than comedy, but still pretty difficult, is writing drama.
.
Melodrama is absurdly easy to do. Especially if the melodrama’s major plot lines are centered around romantic (or even platonic) intrapersonal relationships. That is why shows like Greys Anatomy, or daytime soap operas, can hang on indefinitely. And this show has descended into cheap melodrama. They won’t get serious nominations for awards (I mean, they MIGHT, but it would just be to fill out the nominations numbers with big stars who won’t win, while 2-3 other shows have the only legit chance of winning), and the show won’t make huge money. They’ve got big names attached, and can probably drag out another 2-3 seasons by focusing on the melodrama aspects.
Yay! I’ve been waiting and waiting to find out if this was renewed for ugh ‘cancelled’. Glad it was renewed.
Thanks for the spoiler in the headline before clicking it, moron.
What spoiler in the headline..? Also, the finale for this aired two months ago…..
In the intro text, Mitch’s death is referenced.
Oh, I see it.
that’s not a headline
Take it up with the original commenter then…? I didn’t write it.
The episode in question aired TWO MONTHS ago. If you haven’t caught up yet, you assume the risk in visiting websites about television. The only moron here is you for getting upset about something you have decided not to be up-to-date on.
Yeah, I officially DGAF about people whining about spoilers. You have 48 hours after the OG airing when you could legitimately have beef. Further, don’t go to a TV news media outlet if you don’t want spoilers. It is really easy to avoid these spoilers.
Completely agree. It’s also ridiculously entitled. It’s not the internet’s job to shield you from this information. That’s on you. This website and others don’t “owe” you.
If you haven’t watched it by now, you don’t care that much.
Spare us your faux outrage.
I am astonished that he series was renewed. There was definitely a closure in season 2, which was all over the place.considering the talen5 and money involved, The Morning Show is a trainwreck. The only redeeming aspect of season 2 was Juliana Margulies’ character, whowas the only San and relatable character. I hope that season 3 will finally bring out the potential of all the talent involved.the key ingredient Isa great script which was been missing in action for a very long time.
That’s star power for you. If it didn’t have the cast it has that sloppily written soap wouldn’t have a hope in hell of a renewal. Quite possibly the worst show of 2021.
Well, unlike many of the commenters here I loved Season 2 and thought it was great. So I’m very happy that the show is coming back for a 3rd Season. I hated the way Mitch was written off as the show could’ve done more with his character and his comeback arc but Jennifer Aniston was just brilliant the whole season. Margulies was a fun addition too. Witherspoon felt like the weakest link here, which is a shame since she’s supposed to be the co-lead. But I’m very much looking forward to the new season, perhaps with a different storyline that COVID this time.
I think season 2 was a bit uneven, but there were bright spots. The decision to have the entire season take place in the beginning stages of covid was odd. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 so I’m happy to hear this.
Apple TV must be desperate for original content because Season 2 was an unmitigated disaster. Terrible writing, sophomoric acting from everyone but Marguiles. It was so bad I stopped watching after Ep 6. Hopefully this series ends after Season 3.
Why do you hope it will end? Will someone be forcing you to watch it? Are you afraid you will stumble upon it by accident and it will ruin your day? I have this weird habit…. I don’t know if anyone else does this…. but when I’m not interested in a particular show, I don’t watch it. Whether it’s still on or not doesn’t tend to bother me. But that’s just me. You do you.
Yay! Good days for renewals :) I liked season 2! Not as good as the first one, but still quite close.
Yay!! I like this show even season 2. The actors are what bring me back and make it watchable. I hope they go even deeper next time.
Thinking about how TV Line gave absolutely no mention or credit of the episode after Mitch dies. It was a tremendous episode in line with some of my favorites from all of modern TV, and zilch. I was on the edge of my seat quite literally every second.
Didn’t love season 2, and the decision to bring Carell back was odd considering the character he played. I love everyone on the show though, and am hoping season 3 course corrects.
Hopefully it will go back to being about a TV show. The entire second season felt like a set up to something that didn’t happen and was a hot mess.
The show is just so angry and depressing but I watch season 3 and hope there is a change of tone.
My husband thinks the same. However, I see it as almost satirical and larger than life behavior. Many rich and powerful people, even if not born narcissistic, develop those tendencies due to wealth, power and privilege.
Alex is almost identical to a family member of mine who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I watch it for that alone and laugh hysterically because I see what’s she’s doing.
This portrayal of narcissism, whether international or not by the writers, has been like therapy for me.
Yay!! I loved Season 2 and it had me on the edge of my seat for the last few episodes. Can’t wait for season 3!
I really wish I could love this show because I love so many of those involved but…. I think the main issue I have is that after two seasons I don’t feel like I understand any of the characters. I don’t know who they are or what motivates them. They all feel very inconsistent to me.
