Pickford remains unbeaten with win over Engadine

Staff reports

ENGADINE — Pickford improved to 4-0 with a 65-47 win over Engadine in Eastern UP Conference girls basketball Friday night.

Madison Thurmes scored 24 points, Kennedy Guild hit 22 points and Lizzie Storey added 11 points for the Panthers (4-0 overall, 2-0 EUPC). Guild closed in on the 1,000-point career scoring milestone, pushing her career total to 993 points.

The game stayed close for three quarters before the Panthers surged in the fourth to take the victory. The Panthers held a 41-38 after three quarters before going on a 24-9 run in the final frame. Pickford connected on six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and 11 triples in the game.

“It was a close game all the way until the fourth quarter,” Pickford coach Christy Thurmes said. “We started getting some open outsides shots that gave us the lead.”

Tessa Paquin scored 22 points and Leah French added 13 points for the Eagles (5-3 overall, 2-1 EUPC).

“We played a solid three quarters tonight even though our shot from outside wasn't going in,” Engadine coach Roger French said. “We were only down three going into the fourth. We were able to target the middle of the zone and get Tessa the ball but I still think we could have done that more.”

Pickford is scheduled to host Newberry for an Eastern UP Conference game Wednesday.
