Iowa Smokehouse may be avoiding a lethal mistake with their recall of nearly 15,000 pounds of beef sticks.

One of the company's distributors in Wisconsin shared the news that the product contained milk, but the nutrition label didn't include it in the ingredients list.

Though milk is generally thought to solely cause flair-ups in those who have lactose intolerance, milk allergies (which are different) can have severe adverse effects. According to WebMD, "If you have (an allergy to milk), your body reacts to the proteins in milk and other dairy products as if they’re dangerous invaders. It releases substances that cause allergy symptoms. This allergic reaction can be mild (rashes) to severe (trouble breathing, loss of consciousness). Dairy allergy is one of the most common allergies, especially in children. As many as 2 in every 100 children under 4 years old are allergic to milk."

These are collective symptoms of a milk allergy, according to the site:

  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Swelling, often in the lips and face
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in throat
  • Trouble swallowing

Anaphylaxis is another possible symptom. The reaction is a "serious, life-threatening allergic reaction and often begins minutes after you eat a food you’re allergic to, but sometimes it can happen hours later. It usually involves more than one symptom in more than one part of your body at the same time."

Per KCCI, the beef sticks "were sold at multiple grocery stores in seven western states," and "were produced between Nov. 15 and Nov. 17, 2021."
