The fabled clainet soloist Ivan Mozgovenko, a star on numerous recordings with Sviatoslav Richter and the Borodin Quartet, has died just short of his 99th birthday.

A tank soldier who reached Berlin in April 1945, Mozgovenko avoided regular service in a leading orchestra, preferring to play solos on film tracks and to perform chamber music. He taught from 1951 at the Gnessin Academy but it took them 30 years to make him professor.

A fabulous musician and, by all accounts, teacher too. RIP.
