If demand remains strong I wonder if Xbox can overtake switch launch aligned in the US in Q1 2022. It would be unlikely it would be able to hold onto that long term, but it’s going to end 2021 right next to Switch in the US launch aligned.

The PS5’s continued dominance in Europe is really impressive. Given that most of SIE’s executive leadership and major decision makers are European, I’ve recently started considering PlayStation Europe’s console. Perhaps that’s sacrilege to some, but I feel like even their sensibilities towards software development and game design are European.

It’s a nice symmetry, I think. Xbox branding an corporate culture seem representative of American sensibilities, Nintendo Japanese sensibilities, PlayStation European sensibilities

it's really impressive that the ps5 is ahead of the switch when you line up throws, due to the scarcity of chips. if the ps5 stock improves this year I believe it will end 2022 with 38 million units shipped.

Still, gotta remember that Switch was released March and not on the holidays.

The switch also released to some skepticism after the failure of the WiiU. It took a year or two before people got their hands on and realized what Nintendo had accomplished before sales really exploded

PS5 is riding on a lot of inertia from the previous gen, and advantage the Switch did not benefit from

It's also worth remembering that the ps5 has stock problems. if it wasn't for that the ps5 would have reached 25 million units due to high demand

The Switch was also supply constrained in it's first year. Just like with the PS4, the lines here will also cross several times because the holiday seasons aren't aligned.

I agree with your speculation about them crossing repeatedly. Given the Switch wasn't launched in the holiday season, I think the Xbox will likely pass the Switch in both North America and Europe, only to be passed by the Switch later on, probably in a cycle that will repeat for the first two years of the Xbox Series consoles' lifespan.

However, the Switch wasn't supply constrained to the degree the PS5 and Series X are, was it? I think it was supply constrained more along the lines of what the Series S experienced. Supply and demand for the Series S seems to have fully caught up in most of the world in about 10 months, and a little longer in North America, perhaps 12-13 months in the U.S., and a full 14 months in Canada.

I have been checking online Series S stock in Canada regularly, and for the very first time I now see the Series S in stock on the e-commerce sites of every major electronics retailer in Canada simultaneously, plus in stock on the Microsoft Store, and as of today we're a day short of exactly 14 months after launch. And it wasn't until about 10 months after launch that I started reading comments from VGChartz readers in Europe and elsewhere that the Series S was starting to become easy to find where they live. So depending on market, it seems to have taken 10-14 months for supply to match demand for the Series S, which lines up pretty closely for my recollection of the Switch's trajectory.

PS5 and Series X have now spent more time supply-constrained than either the Series S or Switch did, and the PS5 and the Series X each still have significant pent up demand waiting to be sated.

Since the Series S is the first current-gen console to come out of supply-constraint, it'll be interesting to see if Microsoft starts doing more bundle deals for it (beyond the current Fortnite/Rocket League in-game currency bundle, that is), and what those bundles may look like. Forza Horizon 5 bundle that swaps in the FH5 controller (now that that controller has also come out of supply-constraint)? X-number of months of Game Pass bundle? Special edition colours? A premium Series S with an optical drive?
