The rumours linking Celtic with Riley McGree might have come completely out of the blue but he is someone that Ange Postecoglou has known for a long time now. In fact, he had given the midfielder his first call up to the Australian national team during his time as their manager, back in 2017, when the Charlotte FC star was still a teenager. While he did not make his international debut back then, it just goes on to show how highly he was rated.

McGree has had an interesting career path till now to say the least. He got a move to Club Brugge early on but it did not quite work out. He would return to Australia and was an absolute standout there.

Then, he would move to Charlotte FC but joined Birmingham City on loan before ever making an appearance for the new Major League Soccer team. He has been a standout for the Championship side though and caught the eye of many clubs.

But as reported by the Daily Mail, Celtic are closing in on a move for McGree and are looking increasingly likely to convince him to sign for them in the coming days.

Celtic manager’s old comments about McGree go viral

As expected, Postecoglou’s old comments about the Celtic-linked midfielder have emerged after the rumours broke out. As reported by GOAL, the manager said about McGree back in 2017:

"“We haven’t had in the A-League too many teenagers even getting a run these days. I thought he looked exciting from the moment he broke into the team.“I really like the way he’s adjusted to playing in an unfamiliar position against some pretty good opponents. He’s played [AFC] Champions League and A-League.“He’s just someone I want to have a look at.”"

McGree has gone from strength to strength since then and could be a brilliant addition to this Celtic side. There is no doubt that he has been one of Birmingham City’s best players recently.

One thing that might raise a few eyebrows though is the fact that Celtic have already signed Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi in January and have quite a few options in midfield right now. But McGree might just be too good of a player to miss out on.
