Mythic skins are going to be earned in a different way in League of Legends as Gemstones will be merging with Prestige tokens.

Riot Games are shaking up the monetisation of the most exclusive content in League of Legends , which should technically make it easier to get loot box skins without having to gamble over $300 on average.

First, Prestige tokens and Gemstones will be retired and they will be turned into Mythic Essence. Each Gemstone you have currently will net you 10 ME and Mythic skins will initially cost 100 ME, except a few of the Prestige skins:

  • Battle Queen Diana, Spirit Blossom Teemo and Arcanist Zoe Prestigion skins start at 125 ME
  • 2019 Prestige skins start at 150 ME
  • 2018 Prestige skins start at 200 ME

They will be sold through the Mythic shop which will employ fear of missing out (FOMO) because the skins will be rotated on a monthly basis for Prestige skins or three months for the skins previously available only through Gemstones.

Each time a skin rotates back into the shop after the first appearance, it will get a price bump of 25 ME, pushing players to buy them sooner rather than later.

Furthermore, the exclusive skins will no longer be available through rerolling shards or skin permanents so you will no longer be able to get lucky and roll a highly-priced skin.

Depending on how much you spend on event passes and loot boxes, you will have additional ways to obtain some of these skins but it will still cost more than two AAA games at launch.
