Will Phoebe Bridgers win the lawsuit too?

According to court records, music producer and studio owner Chris Nelson, who is suing Phoebe Bridgers for defamation, has been unsuccessful in an earlier, unrelated defamation lawsuit against singer-songwriter and actress Noel Wells.

After Bridgers falsely accused Nelson in October 2020 of abusive behavior, Nelson sued Bridgers in September 2021.

Nelson is a producer and the proprietor of Sound Space Studios, although he is not identified as working professionally with Bridgers.

Specifically, Nelson is seeking $3.8 million (£2.8 million) in damages from Bridgers, alleging that she "intentionally used her high-profile public platform on Instagram to publish false and defamatory statements" about Nelson "in order to destroy his reputation."

Lawsuit Against Wells

Last January 5, 2022, Los Angeles County Judge Gregory Alarcon dismissed Chris Nelson's complaint against actress Noël Wells at a court hearing.

According to Rolling Stone, he ruled that Wells had a right of "free speech" to warn the indie band Big Thief about alleged "predatory" treatment she received while working with Nelson at his Sound Space studio.

Wells sent a private email to indie band Big Thief who had previously inquired about the recording studio that she works at and Nelson owns.

The SNL mainstay candidly revealed to the inquiring band the "predatory" advances Nelson had made to her. After the studio owner learned of the email, he attempted to change her agreement with Wells on the compensation he would be receiving from the singer's music rights and royalties.

On the said defamation lawsuit, the Judge found Well's remarks made "in the advancement or assistance of the creation of music". Judge Alarcon wrote in his decision that "Artistic and literary expression are protected by the First Amendment".

Nelson says that what Wells had told Big Thief was "false" and that they were an attempt to interfere with his business.

Nelson first filed a lawsuit against Wells in December 2020.

After that, in September 2021, he filed a defamation suit against Bridgers, stating that the singer-songwriter of the hit song "Motion Sickness" defamed him in an Instagram post in which she claimed to have observed "grooming, stealing, (and) violence" performed by Nelson against others.

Phoebe Bridgers' camp has not yet responded to the case, seeking $3.8 million in damages.

Nelson has also yet to comment on the Judge's ruling.
