In for 2022: Beach Leather, as Seen on Julia Fox and Kourtney Kardashian

A whole new vacation look.

Beach goth is a type of music that Spotify may have accused you of being in the 99th percentile of listeners the world over, but now in the earliest days of 2022, it’s also an emergent look. It’s appeared on two Important Women on two different coasts just as the year rolled over.

Here is Kourtney Kardashian in late December in Montecito with her fiancé, Travis Barker, looking like she stepped directly out of The Matrix and onto the beach. The long leather coat…the patent leather combat boots…the look is complete. Since she started dating Barker, the eldest Kardashian daughter has rebranded herself with a fresh cybergoth edge—she’s gone from Jacquemus to Rick Owens bodysuits, in other words—and here she is, doing a full Trinity impression by the sea.

And then, of course, how can anyone forget mere days ago when Julia Fox wore leather pants on a beach in Miami for New Year’s. It feels somewhat strange to shunt Fox under the same umbrella as the Kardashians. They occupy different worlds. Before she got a supporting role in Uncut Gems at 29, she was a known entity in New York as an artist, a writer, a dominatrix, and more. But she’s linked to Kanye, and across the internet, “five things to know about Julia Fox” has popped up over and over, a wider concentric circle of cultural awareness opening up. So now, when she wears leather to a beach, and they wear leather to a beach, one can call three’s a trend, as it were.

And speaking of three’s a trend, we don’t quite have a third yet, but West’s ex, Kim Kardashian, for what it’s worth, wore ripped wide-leg black jeans in the Bahamas with her current fling, Pete Davidson, and matched them with a plunging black bikini. Her beach goth has a sporty edge, one comprised of a marginally easier material with which to maneuver in a seaside context. Anyway, we have miles to go before beach weather descends along the whole coast. Plenty of time for the full “leather mommy by the sea” to come in and go out again like a steady tide.
